Dad's and children's parties are not always associated together because it is usually Mum's job to do the organising, so with Father's Day approaching this week, it got me thinking about Dad's role when it comes to your child's birthday.
I tried to ask Dad's about this for some market research for this blog post, but only one replied and even then he was a fellow entertainer!
It was Mum's that gave me the answers to my questions, no surprise there as they are the ones who usually call me to book my services!
So why do Dad's get overlooked at such an important event in the family calendar?
The majority of Mum's told me that with their circumstances, Dad is usually at work during the day so does not get a chance to call venues, book entertainers etc. By the time he gets home, Dad is either too tired or it's too late to call.
As a Mum myself, I love to organise!
I like to have the control of knowing who I have booked, how I want the party to be and keep on top of the things I have organised and this seemed to be a common theme when talking to other Mum's.
Mum's like to be in control of the household which includes party planning!
In our household, I don't think my husband would know where to start with planning our son's parties!
That is not because he doesn't know how, he just wants an easy life!
That is where I step in!
With all the party planning, all Dad has to do is turn up on the day and of course, pay for it!
Dad's do have a very important role in his child's birthday party.
In conclusion to my market research, most Mum's said that although Dad's didn't do much leading up to the party, he was there to help throughout it which I think is the most important role of all!
With this in mind, I have created a FREE DOWNLOAD for Dad to use before, during and after your child's party so he doesn't feel left out!
Dad's party checklist includes all the usual and obvious jobs that Dad can do including setting up tables and chairs, and blowing up balloons, but it also includes some ideas that other Mum's gave me as well as a few of my own!
We love the Dad's at parties and believe they should be credited for the role they play even if they are not always seen!
I have to say that it is mostly the Dad's that take part in the Hokey Cokey over the Mum's which is always my favourite part of my show!

Face painting season here in Essex is about to begin with school fetes, outdoor parties and events all over the county taking place, but how safe is the paint at these events?
As an experienced face painter, I have been asked lots of questions over the years about my products, how to wash off the paint, and how hygienic my stand actually is.
I am glad parents ask me these questions because it shows they not only care about what design is being painted on to their child's face, but also about the overall hygiene and care that us face painters take to ensure the child's safety.
"But it's just face paint, why the concern?"
We live in a world where working with children has its rewards but it mustn't be overlooked that as a face painter and entertainer, we have a duty to care for our customers, especially your children.
Face painting is a fun and exciting way of showing off our skills and art, as well as bringing joy to your child's face.
With hundreds of painters all over the country, we make it look so easy that others think they can do it too but important factors get overlooked, such as insurance, hygiene protocols, types of paint etc.
So, to ensure your children are getting the best and safest designs around, here is what to look out for this summer -
All face painters must have public liability insurance, this covers them for any accidents, breakages, etc and if you ask them to show they have this, will happily oblige if they are covered.
Most schools get the PTA or parents to volunteer to paint, which is great for keeping their cost down but they don't always have the same hygiene standards as a professional.
Just make sure they use FDA approved paints (information found on the back of any paint) and they regularly change their water.
On the subject of paint, craft paint/craft glitter is a big fat NO!!!
These are not safe for the skin as they are not designed for this activity, especially craft glitter.
Does your child have any skin allergies or intolerances?
If your child has a skin allergy, or you are not sure if your child is allergic to face paint, just ask the painter for guidance.
They would usually offer a patch test, or take caution and not paint your child.
It is at their own discretion but I personally don't like to take the risk if your child has eczema, chicken pox etc.
Quick Tip #1
Help a face painter out by bringing boredom busting activities for the face paint queue!
With face painting being such a popular activity, and having the longest queues,
All those colours look so pretty and amazing, it's tempting to pick them up, so distract your little ones from getting overly excited and poking their fingers into the painters paint!
How do I Remove the Face Paint?
Just use warm water, odourless soap if needed. don't be tempted to use baby wipes as these may irritate the skin.
Try to avoid designs that have a lot of greens and reds, (Hulk springs to mind!) as these tend to stain the skin more than other colours.
Face Painting under 3's
I personally don't like to paint anyone under the age of 3 as they don't really understand what is happening to them! They get very wiggly so the designs don't reflect what I normally paint and their skin has not fully developed yet so they are more prone to allergies. I do offer arm painting if I believe the child will sit for it but this is at my discretion and judgement.
If in doubt, just ask!
Professional face painters won't mind answering your concerns and if you have any worries, then don't get your child painted.
Face painting is popular because children see it as something exciting, and different, and their faces light up when they look in the mirror, creating photo memories for you!
Quick tip #2
Sometimes the cheapest is not always the best!
That £1 tiger may get the job done, but compare that to a £3 butterfly and it is not worth the worry. Expensive face painting reflects the painters experience, hygiene practises and insurance which is always worth paying for and think how wonderful your child will look when you look back at your memories and see a beautiful design!
Have a wonderful and safe summer, wherever you may go!

Since 2014, I have worked alongside Pick a Princess Appearances, a local mascot company, to keep up with the demand of parents needing Elsa or Spiderman to come to their party!
Jelly Jade just does not have a princess face to do this herself, (believe me I have tried, once, never again!) and I like to give my customers the best experience possible.
So, over the years, you may have seen me pop up at your mascot party as a face painter, or you may have seen Jessica and the team turn up after Jelly Jade has finished entertaining!
With amazing reviews week after week, the team at Pick a Princess Appearance make sure your little ones have a reliable and trusting mascot arrive at the party, with characters ranging from Cinderella to Captain America, Belle to Batman, there is something for every Disney loving fan!
I met up with Jessica, owner of Romford's best mascot company, to quiz her on the inspiration behind the business with some fun facts thrown in!
Grab a cup of tea and enjoy!
1 -Hi Jessica, thanks so much for chatting with me.
What inspired you to start your mascot business?
"I have an American family and when Frozen (the movie) came out they could not believe how much I looked like Elsa.
Once the film came out in the UK everyone started commenting over here too and suggested I did appearances.
I love children and thought what an amazing job, being a Queen for parties!
The company started just with me as Elsa and as I gained more positive feedback I expanded."
2 - What is your favourite Disney movie?
"It's Frozen, I just love it, I'll never get sick of the song Let it go.
I also love Lilo and Stitch and Hercules though."
3 - What is your favourite Disney movie song?
"I love Let it go, Love is an Open door, Making today a Perfect Day (Frozen).
I won't say I'm in love (Hercules) Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride Lilo and Stitch)"
4 - If you could be one princess for life who would it be?
Of course Elsa, I go shopping in Tescos after parties in my dress, I am fully convinced I am the real Elsa haha!"
5 - What is the best thing about running your mascot business?
I would say making childrens dreams come true.
"We are idols to them and I feel it is so important to make our visits so special, as to them, it is like they are meeting their favourite celebrity and memories last forever"
6 - What can families expect from your business in the future?
"We aim to keep expanding and introducing new characters as well as opening my own theatre school Razzamataz Havering in September 2017!"
7 - Would your ideal day be a Frozen winter or a hot Beauty and the Beast day?
"I love both!
I love that in England we get to experience cosy winter and warm summer but I would love a bit more snow"
8 - Which of your mascot outfits is your favourite?
"I love the Elsa, Frozen Fever dress as it has a summery feel and is very pretty"
9 - How long does it take you to get ready for a party appearance?
" I have always been super quick at getting ready, people never believe me when I say I can do my hair and make up in around 20-25 minutes!
It's more the prep time getting all the party games, crafts and prizes and music equipment ready that takes the time.
10 - Disneyland Paris or Disney world, Florida?
"I've only ever been to Disneyworld Florida and I'm obsessed with it!
It's my favourite place in the whole world, the last time I went I did my hair like Elsa and everyone was calling me Elsa all day -it was great!
Thank you so much for taking the time to answer these questions!

Baby showers have become very popular over the last few years and they are a great way of getting all your friends together before your baby arrives.
Usually organised by friends of the mum to be, baby showers usually include baby themed games, mini tea parties and a gathering of close friends and family.
However, it also seems traditional to give the mum to be a gift, or more so, the baby!
A baby shower is a great opportunity to bring baby clothes, toiletries, and presents whilst everyone gathers round and oohs and aahs over these gifts.
But, have you ever thought about giving Mum a break in the form of a Baby Bump painting?
A bump painting is a unique and often relaxing way of having a keepsake to treasure forever.
I come along either to mums home or we can arrange a location with a relaxed and private area and a sitting usually takes between an hour and 90 minutes depending on the design.
We have regular breaks in between so that mum is comfortable.
It always a fun opportunity to get your precious bump painted with any design you like!
As a gift, I can provide gift vouchers for you to present at the baby shower and then Mum can book me at a convenient time, or I can come to the baby shower and paint Mum there!
Yes, this does sound a bit daunting for some mums, but I am perfectly happy to paint them in privacy or in public, whatever is comfortable for her!
So, what happens after the bump is painted?
It's photo time of course!
Take as many photos as you can so your memory keeping of your baby starts before they are even born!
Looking for venue ideas?
The Retailery in Romford Market is an ideal place for a bump painting as your package price includes afternoon tea and cake!
I pre arrange a time that suits you and a designated area is arranged for your privacy.
Want to combine a professional photographer?
I also offer bump paintings at the Pandora Images studio in Emerson Park where you will have your bump painted and then photos taken profesionally by the studio themselves, you can then take your photos home with you and framed if you wish!
Whether you are a friend looking for a unique gift idea or a mum to be looking for an ideal keepsake of your baby bump, I can tailor your design ideas and give you a lasting memory of what is an incredible and special time.
You can read about how my first ever bump painting went viral, here.

My balloon twisting workshops were launched this week in the Essex area, but what are the benefits of attending them?
I have put together 5 reasons why you and your child should try my balloon twisting workshops!
1 - Builds children's confidence - I know my eldest has low self esteem and I am always looking for new activities in the area to give him the confidence in social areas.
By giving children their own balloon to make their own design, this gives them the confidence boost to try something new and to not be afraid in new environments.
2 - Children learn new but fun skills - I know balloon twisting isn't an ultimate life skill BUT it is a skill that helps with hand-eye coordination, and is learnt in a fun way!
It's not about sitting down learning how to make a balloon dog and that's it. It isn't about Jelly Jade making the balloons either.
Your child has full control of twisting by themselves as the workshops are designed to be fun enough to take part and easy enough to learn.
3 - Parents make new memories alongside their child - this reason is so important to me, I really love watching my children explore new things, but I am first to admit that i do get bored if it's something that I can't join in with too!
So, the balloon workshops are not just for children to take part and the parents to watch.
I give you balloons too to sit alongside your child and twist balloons together!
Not only will you have so much fun, but you get to enjoy watching your child's face as you laugh and play together, the ultimate bonding session!
4 - Your children will NOT be bored - half term usually fills me with dread as I have a list of places to go but I need to prepare for each one and make sure it fits with my children's ways!
By the end of the first week, I usually roll my eyes to the tune of 'I'm Bored!' and I panic!
My balloon workshops are designed so that children don't get bored half way through.
Once the mystery object and dog has been made by your child, they are given the freedom to make their own creations and be imaginative!
Plus, I even offer a mini magic show for the children to interact with beforehand so they have plenty to do to keep them occupied.
Yes, even my own children have not been bored by learning to twist!
5 - You get to take your creations home with you - the sessions last around 90 minutes but it doesn't end there!
After making around 3-4 balloons, they go home with you!
Now, if your children are really careful, the balloons should last around a week so they can show them off to friends and neighbours when they get home.
Just watch their faces when you tell them your child made them!
Want to join us?
My first taster session is starting February half term in the Romford area.
Tickets can be purchased via Eventbrite or by visiting the contact page.
Looking forward to twisting with you!

As a party entertainer, I offer two different packages to suit you but the best option is the two hour package.
My most popular package costs £200, which may not be in everyone's budget but there is a reason why parents go for this package more than any of the others.
Here are 10 advantages of why booking it will benefit you -
1 - You get value for money - there are no hidden costs and no extra fees, your £200 is all inclusive of games, prizes, music, balloons for each guest and personalised activity packs to give out to your guests.
2 - Two hours does the job - broken down into two 45 minute sections with a break for food in between, there is no need to book any longer saving you money in the long run. I finish the same time as when your guests leave, which means no interruptions and keeps the party atmosphere going right to the end!
3 - Your guests enjoy non-stop entertainment - the thought of having a big hall with lots of your child's friends running around it for two hours doesn't fill anyone with joy! But my non-stop entertainment means you can watch the kids enjoy the party for the full two hours without anyone getting bored! Even during the food, I interact with the children with sing-alongs, chats and silliness!
4 - There is no need to book in any other forms of entertainment - it is always tempting to fill a party with a bouncy castle, face painter, mascots etc, but if you do have a budget, then booking me is enough to layout for, saving you money!
5 - You can relax and enjoy the party - planning your child's party is stressful because you want to get it right, my aim is to make sure your party runs smoothly so I give you a breakdown of what to expect, a few days before, and at the party itself all you have to worry about is the food!
6 - The birthday child is the star of the show - with the two hour package, we have time to make a fuss of your birthday child with my interactive magic show and silly balloon fun! All your guests can join in and give the attention to your child that they deserve making them feel extra special.
7 - Cake presentation is included - after 45 minutes of games, we break for food and cake! Once everyone has finished eating, I settle the kids down for the most important part of your party, the cake! Make the most of my microphone and music as I guide everyone to sing Happy Birthday and end with lots of cheers and clapping!
8 - I love to involve ALL your guests - this includes the adults too! Birthday parties are the most important way to make childhood memories with all your loved ones around you, so when I call the adults up to join in, it makes such a warm and wonderful feeling for you and your child.
9 - Your guests are taken care of - the birthday child is the most important person at the party, but your guests are also there to celebrate! My games are all-inclusive which means no one is ever OUT, they are fun, interactive and unique with individual twists on popular party games to keep it interesting. Your guests get to take home a balloon animal each, plus I give you little booklets with your child's name on the front, and includes colouring sheets and wordsearch for your guests to take home as a nice memento.
10 - You get me! - most entertainers can say they do all this too, but my unique selling point is that you get excellent customer service from me. This includes a hassle free way of booking, help and advice to make your party the best, and everything I learn along the way is given back to you by sharing what I know to make your party planning easier.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope it gives you an idea of what to expect at one of my parties.
But, don't just take my word for it!
I have 5 star reviews over on my Facebook page for you to read through and see what other parents think of me!

In my quest to helping you have a stress free party, I talk about how you can keep the costs low at your party but still have the best entertainment around!
My most popular package is my 2 hour stress free party, at £200.
To some, this may be expensive and more than what they wanted to pay which is completely understandable.
When it comes to planning our children's parties we have an idea of what we can afford and hope to find everything that fits in with that.
There will always be cheaper entertainers, but they charge that price for a reason. It may just be a hobby to them, an extra bit of cash, they are new to the business etc.
I started at a low price and my customers got what they paid for, but without them I couldn't grow.
However, if you worry about your entertainer not turning up, then it is always best to invest in someone that little bit extra for reassurance. There is nothing worse than having a hall full of hyperactive children with no one there to entertain them!
With my £200 package, you get so much more for your money, which I discuss in the next blog post, 10 advantages of booking my most popular package.
But in this blog, I want to show you how you can afford to pay for this package whatever your budget -
1 - SPLIT THE COST - if your child goes to a pre-school, nursery, or school, see if any other child has a birthday close to your child's and see if the parents would like to do a joint party to split the cost! That way, you can both have the best of everything, have the same guests and have half of the expense and stress!
2 - PAY IN INSTALLMENTS - I offer the option of paying for your package in installments, whatever you can afford to pay in the lead up to your party is fine by me!
As long as the full fee is paid by the day of your party.
This is a very effective way of making sure you have the best entertainer and splitting the cost over the months and weeks.
I also ask for a non-refundable booking fee to secure your time slot. This secures your party entertainment whether you have a venue or not, so you can relax knowing the best part is secure.
3 - DON'T OVER DO IT - Once you have booked my most popular package, there is no need for anything extra to pay out for to keep the kids entertained.
There is no need for a bouncy castle, mascot, face painter, etc.
Of course, I do entertain with these if they have already been booked in, but I find they are an extra cost. I am enough to keep the children fully engaged and having fun without them being distracted by other forms of entertainment. I also ask for any bouncy castles to be switched off whilst I am performing partly because of the noise of them, and partly becuase you are paying for me to entertain and if they are all bouncing on a castle, then you have just wasted £200.
Of course, I also offer face painting but I always recommend these as an addition to a party alongside an inflatable or mascot. This is about keeping your costs low and not spending extra on things that you think you need but don't.
4 - BOOK YOUR ENTERTAINER BEFORE THE VENUE - good entertainers are in high demand and therefore, the industry recommends to parents that they book the entertainer first. That way you have the best in the business. Halls are easy to come by, there are hundreds of them in our area but only one of me! I have a list of reasonably priced halls on my website which you can browse through after I am booked and most are around £30 per hour so not too expensive. You then have the most important parts of your party booked
5 - DON'T PAY FOR EXTRA HIDDEN COSTS - with my £200 package, there are no hidden costs, everything is included in the price and that is it. I appreciate that parties are expensive so I try to give you as much value for money as possible and that includes excellent customer service or your money back!
To find out what is included in this, you can email me for an information pack.
If you have any other ways of keeping the cost low at your party, please let me know so I can share this with other parents, as everyone has a different way of doing things.

In 2013, I set up the first bingo fair at Mecca Dagenham and little did I know that it would last three years!
With the help of the manager, Barry and a handful of stallholders, we set up every first Wednesday of the month with a break in January and August.
Wednesdays are £5 for books so it meant this was the busiest night of the week and we had a guaranteed 300 people in the hall every time.
This meant that stallholders could sell their items knowing that there would be good footfall.
Some days were quieter than others but most were heaving with people who built up relationships with the customers knowing that they would return the following month to pick up their ordered items.
The beauty of holding these events in a bingo hall was not just because of the footfall but because when someone won, they had more money to spend on the stalls!
I have had the pleasure of having regular stallholders who have stuck with these events for the last three years, especially Christina from Creative Cards by Christina and Lee Isbitt with his jewellery stall.
Tonight, (14th December) sees the last bingo fair I wil be organising.
Barry, the previous manager moved on to a new job and I felt it was time for me to call it a day as I need to focus on my party business.
In the three years of doing these fairs, we have raised over £2000 for various charities.
I would like to thank each and every stallholder that booked in to any event here, I have made some lovely friends from doing the fairs and together we raised lots of money and hopefully grew your businesses in some way.
Hopefully, Mecca Dagenham will continue to let my stallholders host this event on a regular basis in 2017!
Have you ever been so excited by something that you just had to share it with everyone?
If you have, then you will know how I feel about my friend's latest book for children!
'I Don't Like Cheese' by author, Lizi Jackson tells the story of Matty the Mouse who is a bit different to his siblings and takes the readers on a journey about self discovery!
As a parent, I love to encourage my children to get lost in a book so I could not wait to read this to them. My youngest, 4, only really likes books that he can relate to with visual recognition such as Cbeebies or Nick Junior characters and because of this, I was apprehensive that he wouldn't sit and listen to this. He also struggles with social interaction which makes him different to others. But as soon as I told him the title, he was instantly interested and could not wait to hear it at bedtime.
The easy way in which Lizi has written the book, with its rhythmic poetry, means that the story could flow without my voice getting lost and this kept my son's attention throughout. He loved joining in at the parts he knew he could as it has repetitive verses and he understood what was happening to Matty throughout. The illustrations by Ryan Fairbanks are beautiful and fill the pages with a lovely rustic feel to it.
My eldest son, 10, really struggles with fitting in with his peers and has low self esteem so I was hoping this book would help with improving this. He took the story to bed with him and enjoyed giving me feedback afterward saying he really enjoyed the story and that he could relate to the main character.
With this in mind, I wanted to share with you why 'I Don't Like Cheese' makes the perfect Christmas present so I asked Lizi to take time out of her day to answer the questions I was excited to know the answer to!
Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions!
Firstly, what inspired you to write this book and why did you want to write it?
I wrote this story a few years ago for my children – I never imagined that one day it would be a book! My son had recently been diagnosed with autism and this is what led me to write about a little mouse who knew he was different but learned to love his differences. I hoped at the time my son would come to feel the same way about having autism, and I’m delighted to say this is indeed very much the case now.
When you first read the book to your children, how did they react?
They’ve always enjoyed hearing the story and it’s been interesting seeing how they take different messages from it as they grow older. When the children were younger they were impressed that Matty the Mouse tried lots of different types of cheese when his parents asked him to. Now they are growing up they comment on what it is like for Matty to feel that he’s different.
Did your children help you with the writing process?
My daughter does, yes. She’s my biggest critic! It’s really helpful reading my stories to her while they’re being written because she’ll tell me immediately if she doesn’t like part of it or if I’m not explaining my ideas as clearly as I think I am!
Matty the Mouse is a character that just wants to fit in, can you relate to him yourself or have previous experiences of this?
I think we can all relate to some extent. It’s our similarities that often initially draw us to other people, and I think it’s only human to want to fit in with the people around us. It takes real courage and confidence to embrace the things that make us different, and I didn’t really start doing that until I reached my thirties.
After the story, you have a list of questions about the book. What was the thought process behind this?
I’m a qualified PSHE teacher and I know the value of using stories to help children explore some potentially difficult ideas. I always knew I wanted to structure some “food for thought” questions to encourage children to think more about the themes of the book and to help parents who might want to discuss those ideas with their children.
What was the hardest part of writing the book?
The hardest part was not knowing whether anyone would like it. When I read it to the children who came to my book launch and I saw their faces transfixed and smiling as they listened, it was such a massive relief!
At your book launch, how did the children and parents react to the book?
The children loved the character of Matty and I felt like they could really relate to him. The illustrator, Ryan Fairbanks, did a truly incredible job of bringing my little mouse to life and making him completely adorable.
Did you learn anything from writing the book?
I’ve learned that I’m good enough! I was very nervous when I first showed the story to anyone other than my children, and was delighted to receive such wonderful feedback.
What advice do you have for parents who struggle with everyday parenting?
I think it helps to know that every single parent struggles. Whether your child has special needs or not, parenting is massively difficult and we are all learning as we go along. I think it’s important for parents to be kind to themselves and realise we all make mistakes. In fact I think it’s great for our kids to see that we sometimes make the wrong choices, and for us to show them the important thing isn’t being perfect, it’s acknowledging when we’ve gone wrong and work to put it right.
Do you have future stories involving Matty the Mouse?
I’ve had an idea for a follow-up story about Matty’s experiences of being different at school.
What are your future projects?
I’ve started my second rhyming book, Hula Petula, and hope to have it published in 2017. I’ve also started writing my first young people’s novel which is about the experiences of a boy with autism.
What is your favourite childhood book?
I was a voracious reader as a child and it’s very difficult to pick one favourite!
Why should people buy your book?
The book encourages children to acknowledge and embrace the things that make them different, and also consider ways to appreciate differences in other people. It’s a fun and heart-warming story with an important message running through it.
Thank you so much Lizi, for taking the time to answer my questions!
It is a book highly recommend to all parents and children, especially those who struggle with fitting in and being different.
You can purchase the book from Lizi's website, www.lizijackson.co.uk
